Sustainable Polymers, Characterization

Chemical composition and purity of copolymers (block copolymers, chitosan, glucomannans, lignin etc.) using capillary electrophoresis (CE) and SEC, Branching in polymers using CE and SEC, Molar mass and hydrodynamic volume of polymers using (multiple detection) SEC and Taylor Dispersion analysis (TDA), Dissolution and solubility of biobased polymers.

Current research

  • Encapsulation of active molecules (ibuprofen, flavonoids, porphyrins) using chitosan and other biopolymers, monitoring of release
  • Relation between starch structure and rice or potato properties
  • Prediction and characterization of the structure of biobased polyesters and polyamides resins
  • Role of branching in the encapsulation and binding of drugs by poly(acrylic acid)

Recent results

Lignocellulosic biomass is a very rich (and thus complex) source of biopolymers and monomers. We have been using fatty acids a source of monomers and previously developed a commercial biobased hot-melt adhesive. We are now looking also into the hemicelluloses that can be extracted from sawdust as part of a MSTD project with Université de Technologie de Compiègne and ESCOM (Nabil Grimi, Mohamed Benali). The nature of the polysaccharides in the hemicellulose is not clear and separation and characterization methods are lacking or their performance (recovery, reproducibility) not yet known.

In Nicole Najoum’s PhD project, we are showing that capillary electrophoresis can separate a large (10,000s ? 100,000s ?) number of macromolecules in hemicelluloses extracted from sawdust or even in glucomannans, galactomannans or xylans’ «standards ».
