IPCM alongside CNRS Chimie at the Village de la chimie

As it does every year, CNRS Chimie is taking part in the Chemistry Village on March 1 and 2, 2024 at Paris Montreuil Expo. On the program for this 21st edition, dedicated to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, will be discussions on careers in chemical research and scientific activities for young people organized by the IPCM.

The Village de la chimie, an event aimed at schoolchildren and the general public, brings together academic and industrial players from the world of chemistry. Organized by France Chimie, the trade organization for companies in this sector, these days present a wide range of professions to help young people in their career choices.

Once again this year, the IPCM is offering workshops to raise awareness of the chemical sciences, in support of CNRS Chimie, the organization’s representative. Let’s discover the themes of the experiments imagined by the scientists to combine science and sport…

A gold medal for young chemists

Through a journey to the heart of matter, discover the work of the chemist: the synthesis, purification and characterization of products, as well as their properties.

Of course, not everything that glitters is gold! In fact, can you turn a bronze medal into silver and a silver medal into gold? Can you reproduce the look of gold without metal?

Glucose or not glucose ?

During intense physical effort, such as a marathon, we may feel a slight fatigue due to the high demand on our muscles and respiratory system. To recharge our batteries, we need a molecule called ATP, which can be produced in our bodies from glucose.

During the race, is it better to eat an apple or potato chips? A simple experiment using Fehling’s liqueur to detect glucose will help us answer this question. Through this experiment, themes and concepts such as chemical reactions, experimental design and scientific reasoning will be addressed.

Diffraction to reach the heart of crystals

Crystals are all around us: under our feet, in our homes, on our plates… The best-known crystal in our daily lives? Sugar, of course! But how is this molecule, an essential source of energy for all physical activity and sport, organised in its crystallised form? X-ray diffraction will help us answer this question! What information do we obtain? What use does this technique have for researchers?

Polymers occupy a very important place in the large family of materials. Researchers are trying to develop natural and therefore durable “plastics” for sports equipment or clothing.
