Current research

Solid-state NMR characterization of molecular magnetic materials:

  • Structural information at local order: complementarity with X-ray diffraction (average view)
  • Magnetic information (hyperfine interactions with unpaired electrons from transition metals): determination of the spin density on the probed nucleus / spin transfer mechanisms

Selected recent results :

Cadmium-113 magic angle spinning NMR (MAS) measurements on model Prussian Blue analogues Cd3[FexCo1-x(CN)6]2,15H2O (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) allowed:

  • to confirm the role of the polarization mechanism in the transfer of the spin density from the paramagnetic center to the cadmium core through the cyanide bridge;
  • to show a significant difference of the real structure compared to the average view proposed by the DRX (Figure 1).

The NMR of paramagnetic compounds through these results shows that NMR spectroscopy can be a powerful characterization technique even for this kind of materials. Indeed, the presence of a paramagnetic source in the vicinity of the observed nucleus led to a bursting of the signals producing a sort of “magnifying glass effect” on the NMR spectrum and thus allowed a clear distinction of the Cd sites as well as their quantification, which is not always possible in diamagnetic derivatives (Figure 2).
