Presentation of the eMOCA research group

Our research group eMOCA (“molecular electrochemistry and catalysis”) is recognized at an international level in the field of molecular electrochemistry and photochemistry, electron transfer reactivity and catalysis.

Created from the merger of members of the REACTE (“reactivity and catalysis by electron transfer”) and ELIAS (“electrochemistry and engineering of supramolecular assemblies”) groups of the Laboratoire d’Electrochimie Moléculaire (UMR 7591 CNRS-Université Paris Cité), the eMOCA group joined Sorbonne Université and the IPCM in the summer of 2024.

The group is based on 6 permanent researchers and faculty members, and 2 research support staff and it usually hosts about 15 young researchers (PhDs, Postdocs, Interns, Visitors or Guests).

    In the last years, we have made important contributions to proton-coupled electron transfers (PCET) reactions, that are the object of current active theoretical and experimental attention in view of their implication in a huge number of natural and synthetic processes. Concerning the later, we are investigating the electro- and photo-chemical activation of small molecules such as H2, O2, H2O, CO2, N2 by metal complexes in solution as well as attached to surfaces or materials, in an effort to address contemporary energy challenges (storing energy into chemical bonds). For all of these reactions, the coupling of electron and proton transfers is playing a crucial role, both in terms of mechanism, efficiency, and products distribution.

    We have developped a strong expertise in chromatographic analytical methods (liquid, gas and ionic chromatography, coupled to mass spectrometry) to detect and quantify our reaction products, including isotopically labelled ones.

    We are also developing new methodology and reactions for green electrosynthesis, in an effort to electrify homogeneous catalysis.

    Our research efforts are supported by several fundings including regional (DIM), national (ANR, PEPR) and european (Horizon) programs, and also through industrial partnerships.
