synthesis, reactivity and study of the properties of organometallic biphenyl (C^C)-based gold(III) complexes

Current research

Research topics are oriented toward synthesis, reactivity and study of the properties of organometallic biphenyl (C^C)-based gold(III) complexes associated with different ligands for various applications:

1) Applications in anticancer therapy

We have developped a family of complexes [ (C^C)Au(N^N) ]+ (where (N^N) stands for a bipyridine, phenanthroline or dipyridylamine). We demonstrated the substitution of the N^N ligand in the presence of cycteine, histidine and glutathion as well as the redox stability of the [ (C^C)Au ]+ scaffold. Our current research are oriented toward new families of complexes using more stable chelates and hemilabile ligands. The mechanisms of action of the most promissing candidates are also investigated.

2) Ligand dissociation studies (in collaboration with CSOB team)

We have synthetized a family of complexes bearing variously substituted pyridine ligands and established a direct methodolgy for measuring the dissociation energy of these ligands by mass spectrometry using a HCD collisionnal setup. We showed the relationship between the pka values and the disociation energies of the ligands and correlated the dissociation energies of the pyridine ligands with the catalytic activities of the complexes enabling the optimisation of the catalytic properties of these complexes.

3) Studies of the luminescence properties (in collaboration with Matteo Mauro, UniStra)

Cationic diphosphine-based complexes have showed solid state photoluminescence properties (with quantum yields up to 39 %). These complexes have been used for the fabrication of light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) with an external quantum efficacy up to 1 % establishing the first proof-of -concept of the used of Au(III) complexes for LEC device fabrication.

Scientific career

  • Oct. 2018-: CNRS Researcher at Sorbonne Université, Institut Parisien de Chimie Moléculaire, Chembio team on the synthesis and study of gold complexes associated to biomelecules for therapy and biocatalysis.
  • Oct. 2017-Sept. 2018 : Post-doctoral research associate in Prof. Thorimbert group on the synthesis of theranostic compounds based on heteropolycyclic ligands. (Institut Parisien de Chimie Moléculaire, UPMC, Paris, France).
  • Feb. 2015-Sept. 2017: Post-doctoral research associate in Prof. Bochmann group on the synthesis of cyclometallated gold(III) for photoluminescence and anticancer applications (Scool of Chemistry, University of East Anglia, Norwich, United Kindom).
  • 2013: Research stay in Pr. Maria Agostina Cinellu in the University of Sassari (Sassari, Italy) on the synthesis of cyclometalated Au(III) complexes for anticancer applications.
  • Sept 2011- jan 2015 : Shared PhD degree between the University of Burgundy (Dijon, France) and the University of Groningen (Groningen, The Netherlands) on the synthesis and anticancer evaluation of gold-based complexes.
  • 2009-2011: Master Molecular Chemistry and Green Processes, University of Burgundy (Dijon, France).
